New York Fashion Week
We’re doing last minute things today so that tomorrow we can send those girls down the runway at noon. I would say that this show was the reason I came to New York, but I was actually more interested in learning all the steps that lead up to the show. Fashion Week is just icing on the cake.
Tomorrow I’ll be backstage, making sure the right shoes get taken off one girl and quickly put...

Feedback
Whew! A solid 12 hours of work at my internship today. Ah, fashion week approacheth!
Yesterday I was given a huge responsibility that is usually reserved for the actual designers. It’s a complicated matrix of information I need to hold in my head while editing and creating three separate documents that will be given to the factories, so if I mess up…. well, I can’t mess up. So...

I have in fact come up with something genius.
And now I need to find a way to fun the prototyping process because in all modesty, these designs will be AMAZING.
You know what I miss? Getting my hands dirty and making shoes.
That needs to happen again soon.

After sketching every day last week I realize that I have reeled it in too much. My designs look boring, too marketable. What I’m good at is wild and structural, and I should make sure I put some of that in my portfolio.
I think I am too used to challenging myself every step of the way. Sometimes it’s good to just do what you are already good at. There is nothing wrong with enjoying...

Despite, or perhaps because of, my general level of exhaustion, I had two great days at my internship. I’m finding my feet here, and I’m really starting to like it.

Goal
The day I get Tilda Swinton into a pair of my heels I will be a rockstar. Designer Achievement Unlocked!
For the first time I am thinking in terms of a collection. After sketching for a couple hours I looked over the ones I liked to see which last shapes I repeated, what heel heights I needed to build more on, and what materials, textures, and colours I could pull across the group. I think being around the design team and helping them work on the collection has actually taught me something...

About My Dad
Around this time of year, when people are gearing up for one holiday or another, my thoughts tend toward an event that changed my life seventeen years ago. On the morning of Dec 25th 1994 my father died unexpectedly. I was nine years old, and the aftershocks of his sudden and bloody death still affect me today. The trauma of the event left me without memories of my childhood before he died. I can...

With all that spare time I have...
So I have decided that I really want to get involved with Punchdrunk theatre company in some way, shape, or form. Now that I’ve seen Sleep No More three times (possibly going again two more times!) I realize that despite having spent all my teen and pre-teen years in improv theatre, I never went back to it because it didn’t feel quite right. What Punchdrunk does feels right to me. It...

A Good Day!
Today was a good day at my internship!
I went out on a limb by making a photoshop mock up in a colorway that I wasn’t asked to do, and turns out everyone really liked it!
Then the guy who gave me my initial (and largely negative) review came by to tell me my sketching is looking really good!
And then I was invited to attend a short meeting with a leather seller where we looked over...

I have spent the last few weeks rendering and mocking-up shoe material possibilities in photoshop. In all modesty I have gotten pretty damn good at it, too. Even my two supervisors have mentioned on several occasions that I’m doing great work. I wish I could share some of what I’m doing with you, but obviously I can’t.
*sigh*

Hope
Through a miracle of desperate research I stumbled across an organization that might be willing to help me pay for a proper education (or at least further training) in footwear design and shoemaking.
Please cross your fingers, toes, or any other appendages you might have laying around unused. If this pans out it would change my future and bring about opportunities I assumed I would never get.

So I have lived in this here fair city for a little over a month now. And despite working in the design industry every day, what stands out most about New York is that it is a city full of art. San Francisco (which I love) is much more tech focused, and I never realized how much I missed being around other people who like to perform, create, and make shit. Being around all this theatre, art, and...

Was It Already Week 4?
Today was fun.
I did some research that that allowed me to see previous seasons in development, did some paperwork and forms, and a bit of photo shop work with the prototypes we recently got in. This might sound boring but it isn’t! This the sort of stuff I really want to know. I want to understand how a prototype order is placed, the schedules you can expect to encounter when producing in...

Today I did a lot of photoshop work, and learned a few new techniques. By the end of the day I had gotten the knack of things, I think.
It felt really good to learn something.
